4 . Why use mulch?
There are many reasons why you should choose landscape mulch. Mulching is an excellent way to reduce maintenance and conserve moisture. Mulching controls unwanted weeds and helps to prevent soil erosion. A layer of mulch helps to maintain more even soil temperatures and it can enrich the soil with nutrients. Mulching will also give your home or business a fresh decorative and appealing look all season long.

5 . When and how often should I mulch?
The best time to mulch new plantings is right after you plant them. Mulch around established plant in early spring. This is when plants are beginning to grow and before weed seeds start to germinate. How often mulch needs to be replenished depends on the mulching material. Fine textured mulches tend to break down more quickly than those with larger particles. Replenish mulches when the effective layer is less than 3 inches deep or as needed to refresh the look of the mulch. Inorganic mulches such as gravel and pebbles need replenishing less often. As the plants grow and fill in the bed areas, less and less mulch is needed.

6 . Where should I use mulch?
Mulching is a very important practice for establishing new plantings, because it helps to conserve moisture in the root ball of the new plant until the roots have grown out into the surrounding soil. The growth rate and health of trees and shrubs increases when there is no competition for water and nutrients from weeds. Mulch also helps to prevent tree trunk injury by mowers and trimmers. Newly planted trees require a circle of mulch 3 to 4 feet in diameter. Mulch entire beds of shrubs, trees, annuals, herbaceous perennials and ground covers.

7 . How deep should my mulch be?
Generally, a layer between 3 and 4 inches is best. At this depth, the mulch is able to keep sunlight from drying the soil and allowing germinating weed seeds to grow. It also allows water to penetrate down to the soil easily. Further, as the mulch decomposes, there is an adequate amount still above the soil surface to keep protecting your plants. For non-organic mulches like decorative gravels, 2-3 inches is usually preferred.

8 . Are colored mulches safe for plants and animals?
Yes, the raw materials used to make colored mulches are made from naturally occurring colors found on the earth’s surface. These colorants and the ingredients are specially formulated to be non-toxic to plants and animals. The use of gloves is recommended for installation to prevent staining of skin. Always apply color enhanced mulches when the weather forecast does not include rainfall. Rain on freshly applied colored mulch could cause the pigment to run and could temporarily stain concrete, brick or siding.

9 . How long does colored mulch maintain its color?
Color enhanced mulch will typically maintain its color for one year. Top dress as needed to keep the color at it's brightest.

10 . What is the Mulch and Soil Council?
The mission of the MSC is to define quality products and promote an open marketplace for producers of horticultural mulches, consumer soils and commercial growing media. River City certifies it's bagged mulches to MSC's standards. Our certified products carry the MSC logo. For more information, go to www.mulchandsoilcouncil.org
